A man from China has filed a peculiar lawsuit against his ex-wife, claiming she owes him $26,000, or the “bride price.” The woman had an abortion and filed for divorce two months after they were married. According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), she continued this pattern with six more men. The man then proceeded to have the wife’s divorce granted.
The woman was named by the outlet under the alias Shuang. It stated that in March, she went on a blind date set up by a matchmaker and met the man named Xiaoya. Shuang, who is from the Henan region in central China, found out she was pregnant in July, which abruptly changed the course of their relationship. They were married in just two months.
After that, the woman made the decision to have an abortion, saying the obstetrician discovered a fetal defect. Soon after the abortion, Shuang filed for divorce.
Xiaoya consented to the divorce but sued in the local court to get her gift—known as the “bride price” in the area—back from him when they were married. As a condition of engagement, it is customary for a man to pay money to the family of his future wife.
Two lower courts dismissed the man’s case, but in an appeal that was brought before a higher court, Xiaoya disclosed that Shuang had been married to six men and had employed a similar strategy, which involved falsely claiming to be pregnant, getting an abortion, and asking for divorce as soon as possible.

He asserted that she married for financial gain.
Xiaoya even brought out a man who testified in court that Shuang had married his son, divorced him in a few of months, and never gave back the present she had been given.
After concluding that Shuang had no intention of starting a relationship with Xiaoya, the high court ordered Shuang to refund $14,000 to her. The woman claimed to have had an abortion and a pregnancy, but the judge did not order her to repay the full amount.
