Prime Minister Narendra Modi made history today with his first-ever visit to Ukraine as an Indian Prime Minister. He met with President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Martyrologist Exposition in Kyiv. The two leaders shared a warm hug and handshake during their meeting.
PM Modi’s visit to Kyiv follows a 10-hour journey from Poland aboard the ‘Rail Force One’ train, marking the second leg of his two-nation trip. During his time in Ukraine, he is scheduled to hold both one-on-one and delegation-level talks with President Zelensky.

The discussions will focus on finding a negotiated settlement to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
This visit comes nearly six weeks after PM Modi’s high-profile trip to Russia, where he had extensive talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, primarily addressing the conflict. The prime minister last met President Zelensky in June during the G7 summit in Apulia, Italy. During that meeting, PM Modi assured Zelensky of India’s support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, emphasizing that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for peace. Zelensky extended an invitation to PM Modi to visit Kyiv, which he has now fulfilled.
Earlier on Thursday, PM Modi met with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. He expressed deep concern over the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, reiterating that “dialogue and diplomacy” are crucial for restoring peace. He stated, “This is India’s firm belief that no problem can be solved on the battlefield. The loss of innocent lives is a significant challenge for all humanity.”
