Hindu Man Dies After Jumping Into Canal During Mob Chase In Bangladesh

A 25-year-old Hindu man, Mithun Sarkar, died on Tuesday afternoon after jumping into a canal while trying to escape a mob in Mohadevpur upazila of Bangladesh’s Naogaon district, police said.

According to local media reports citing police sources, a group of locals chased Sarkar in the Chakgori area over allegations of robbery.

In a desperate attempt to save himself, he jumped into a nearby deep canal, but strong currents swept him away.

Authorities received information soon after the incident.

Teams from the Mohadevpur Police Station, the Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot and launched a coordinated rescue operation.

After several hours of searching, Fire Service divers recovered Sarkar’s body from the canal and declared him dead.

Confirming the incident, Mohadevpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahidul Islam said Sarkar jumped into the canal while fleeing the mob. He added that police have started a detailed investigation and will take further legal action after the post-mortem examination.

The incident marks the seventh reported case of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh in the past 19 days and the third within a single week, raising serious concerns over the safety of minority communities.

On Monday, two Hindu men died in separate attacks. In Narsingdi district, assailants allegedly attacked 40-year-old Sarat Chakraborty Mani with sharp weapons.

In another incident, unidentified gunmen shot dead 38-year-old Hindu businessman Rana Pratap Bairagi in Jashore district.

Several other cases of mob violence and targeted killings have been reported in recent weeks.

The rising attacks under the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government have triggered public outrage and drawn condemnation from international human rights organisations, intensifying demands for stronger protection of minority rights.
