Hama’s Attack On Israel: Diplomatic Tightrope For India

The ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict has indeed placed India in a diplomatically challenging situation, especially given its efforts to expand its role in the Middle East through regional alliances and increased diplomatic activities.

India’s response, as expressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement, leans toward expressing solidarity with Israel, aligning with one camp that condemns the terrorist attacks. This statement can be seen as a clear message of support for Tel Aviv.

This stance is significant in the context of India’s strained relations with both China and Pakistan, both of which have reacted differently to the violence. China expressed concern, while Pakistan placed the blame on Israel’s actions in the region.

The conflict also comes shortly after India’s announcement of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, a project aimed at boosting connectivity and trade in the region, which was seen as a counter to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

However, the violence in Israel could potentially impact Saudi Arabia, an important partner for India, as it has been mediating the normalization of its ties with Israel. Hamas’ attack is perceived as a message to Riyadh, which has called for an immediate halt to the violence and emphasized the importance of Palestinian interests.

India’s approach to the Israel-Palestine conflict has evolved over the years, from initially refraining from recognizing Israel to establishing full diplomatic ties in 1992. While publicly supporting the Palestinian cause, India has maintained strong ties with Israel, especially in the defense sector.

The current situation poses a challenge for India as it seeks to balance its trade and strategic interests in the Middle East, given its deep-rooted relationships with countries like Saudi Arabia and Israel. India’s cautious approach underscores the complexity of the issue and the high stakes involved in its Middle East engagements.
