Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government has become the longest-serving in Italy’s postwar republican history. It surpassed the previous record held by Silvio Berlusconi.
PM Meloni took office as Italy’s first woman Prime Minister on 22 October 2022. Her administration completed 1,413 days in office, marking the milestone.

Taking to X, PM Meloni posted, “Today our Government becomes the longest-serving in the history of the Italian Republic. It is a fact that I welcome with gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility. Because stability is not a record to flaunt, but the condition that allows a Nation to plan, decide, honor commitments, and command respect.”
PM Meloni said her government had worked to boost employment, lower unemployment, support families and businesses, strengthen security and manage public finances responsibly. She further highlighted efforts to restore Italy’s international influence and credibility.
PM Meloni credited the achievement to her united coalition rather than an individual. She said the alliance had governed with a shared vision and remained together to deliver its project for Italy.
“This stability is not the merit of a single person. It is the result of a united coalition, which has governed for four years with a shared vision and which has chosen to stay together not against someone, but to realize a project for Italy. I do not believe it is a coincidence that, from today, the three longest-serving Governments in republican history are all center-right governments. Stability is built when an alliance shares values, goals, and a vision of the Nation, not when the only reason to stay together is to prevent others from governing,” the post read.
PM Meloni said Italians’ trust in 2022 created this stability. She further stressed that her government had never treated that mandate as a blank cheque.
The Italian Prime Minister said the government would face voters again next year. It would present its record, unfinished work and future plans.
“Next year we will return before the citizens with what we have done, with what remains to be done, and with our idea of the future. And it will once again be up to them to decide whether we deserve to continue this journey. In the meantime, the work goes on,” the post added.
PM Meloni said the government would mark the milestone in Bari, where it would discuss its achievements and future priorities.
President Sergio Mattarella swore in Meloni as Prime Minister at the Quirinale Palace on 22 October 202 She remains Italy’s first woman Prime Minister.
PM Meloni entered politics at 15 and became a provincial councillor at 21. At 27, she led Azione Giovani. She entered Parliament at 29 and later became vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies.
At 31, PM Meloni became Italy’s youngest-ever Minister, serving as Minister for Youth in 2008.
