G7 Summit: PM Modi’s Talks Deliver Trade Gains With UK, Canada And EU

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bilateral engagements on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, highlighted the growing impact of India’s multi-alignment foreign policy, with significant progress recorded in trade and economic partnerships with major global economies.

One of the key outcomes was the announcement that the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will come into force on July 15, 2026, following discussions between PM Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The implementation of the agreement is expected to boost bilateral trade and investment while marking a structural transformation in India’s global trade architecture.

At the same time, India has safeguarded sensitive sectors, including dairy products, cereals, millets, edible oils, oilseeds, apples and several vegetable products.

Trade negotiations also featured prominently during PM Modi’s meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

According to the India-Canada joint statement issued after the meeting, both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress made towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and reaffirmed their shared objective of concluding negotiations in 2026.

The development signals a renewed push to strengthen economic ties between the two countries following recent efforts to reset bilateral relations.

During talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, both sides reviewed progress following the conclusion of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement negotiations.

Costa stated, “Since we have concluded the ‘mother of all trade deals’, we have been moving fast to deliver on our commitments. We will sign the Free Trade Agreement by the end of the year.”

PM Modi later posted on X that discussions focused on further deepening economic linkages and enhancing cooperation. He noted that growing India-EU collaboration could contribute significantly to global peace, stability and prosperity.
