Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday highlighted the growing momentum in India-US relations during a meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France.
The two leaders also discussed developments in West Asia, maritime security and ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring regional peace.
The meeting marked the first in-person interaction between PM Modi and President Trump since their summit in Washington last February. It came as both countries discussed a possible trade agreement and broader strategic cooperation.
“The last time we met in Washington. After that, there has been a new momentum in our relations. There has been a new energy. And, in many ways, we are moving forward together. It is a matter of joy for us that we are working together and both our teams are trying to achieve the target we have set. We are moving forward very fast,” PM Modi said.
During the talks, Prime Minister Modi commended President Trump for efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in West Asia.
“A new hope for peace and stability in the region has been rekindled, and I am confident that this will lead to a longstanding peace in the region. You and I agree that keeping the Strait of Hormuz open is vital for the global economy,” PM Modi said.
Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s long-standing position on ensuring freedom of navigation and called for continued cooperation on maritime security. He also stressed the importance of safeguarding Indian seafarers working along global maritime trade routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.
“You are aware that, across the world, hundreds of thousands of Indian seafarers are working and performing their duties along global maritime trade routes, including the Strait of Hormuz. Their safety and security are of utmost importance to us,” PM Modi said.
PM Modi further noted that President Trump had made ‘tremendous efforts’ to secure an agreement with Iran and help end the ongoing crisis. He also expressed confidence that the welfare of seafarers would remain a priority during the implementation of any peace arrangement.
According to the White House, the two leaders were also likely to hold discussions on economic growth and supply chains. They were expected to address artificial intelligence, investment partnerships and global security challenges as well.
