From Semiconductors To Startups, India–Japan Partnership Symbolises Mutual Trust: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the combination of Japan’s advanced technology and India’s skilled workforce could drive a global technological transformation, as he addressed leading business figures in Tokyo.

Calling Japan an indispensable partner, PM Modi urged Japanese companies ‘to come and make in India and make for the world’.

Addressing the gathering at an Economic Forum meet, PM Modi noted, “I am happy that my journey is beginning with business giants. In India’s development journey, Japan has always been a key partner. From metro rail to manufacturing, semiconductors to startups, our partnership in every sector has become a symbol of mutual trust.”

The Prime Minister highlighted that Japanese businesses have already invested more than $40 billion in India.

“In the last 11 years, you are well aware of India’s unprecedented transformation; today, there is political and economic stability in the country. India is contributing 18 per cent to global growth,” PM Modi asserted.

The Prime Minister attributed the pace of change to India’s ‘reform, perform, transform’ strategy. He referenced the Goods and Services Tax, income tax reforms, and other policy changes that have reshaped the economy.

“We have focused on ease of doing business. For businesses, we have started a single window for approvals. We have rationalised 45,000 compliances,” the Prime Minister further remarked. “We have opened sectors like defence and space to the private sector, and the nuclear space is now being opened as well, signalling more opportunities for collaboration.”

Reinforcing his key message, PM Modi added, “Japan is a tech powerhouse and India is a talent powerhouse.”

The Prime Minister illustrated the breadth of cooperation between the two nations. To begin with, the collaboration spans steel factories in Gujarat and biogas initiatives in rural villages. Furthermore, the partnership includes:

  • Assam as a gateway to Tokyo’s research hubs,
  • Farmers in India’s countryside, and
  • AI innovators in Bengaluru and Tokyo

Finally, the cooperation also extends from semiconductor fabrication to academic exchanges.

Together, he said, these initiatives form the foundation of a new era of India–Japan cooperation.

Framing this within his government’s vision of ‘Make in India, Make for the World’, the Prime Minister stressed that the partnership would not only transform industry, agriculture, and human resource development in both nations but also shape the wider region and global economy.
