From Orchid Art To Silver Sailboat: PM Modi’s Special Gifts To Norway’s Royal Family

Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented specially curated Indian gifts to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, King Harald V, Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon during his visit to Norway, highlighting India’s artistic traditions, sustainable craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

Prime Minister Modi gifted Jonas Gahr Støre a pressed orchid painting and orchid paperweights crafted from real orchids and ferns collected from Sikkim’s valleys.

Local artisans carefully preserved the natural elements to create artworks celebrating the biodiversity of the Eastern Himalayas and India’s commitment to sustainability.

Officials said the gift also reflected a shared appreciation for environmental conservation and nature-inspired artistry.

For Crown Prince Haakon, Prime Minister Modi presented a Kalamkari painting featuring Sun and Moon motifs.

Originating in Andhra Pradesh, Kalamkari remains one of India’s oldest art traditions, known for hand-painted or block-printed textile art created using natural dyes.

The artwork symbolised balance and harmony, with the Sun representing vitality and the Moon reflecting calmness and intuition.

Prime Minister Modi gifted Queen Sonja a Palm Leaf Pattachitra artwork from Odisha, an intricate art form created by engraving detailed illustrations onto treated palm leaves.

The artwork highlighted India’s long-standing storytelling and craftsmanship traditions.

King Harald V received a silver sailboat crafted using Odisha’s Tarakasi silver filigree art, known for its intricate hand-shaped silver patterns and centuries-old heritage.

The sailboat reflected Odisha’s maritime history and Norway’s strong seafaring culture.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Norway, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in more than 40 years, also focused on cooperation in green technology, Artificial Intelligence and India-Nordic relations.
