France expressed deep concern on Sunday following the United States’ military strikes on three of Iran’s key nuclear facilities and distanced itself from the operation.
The French government emphasised the need for restraint from all involved parties to prevent a broader conflict in the Middle East.
The Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs stated that France did not participate in or plan the strikes.
The ministry urged the US, Iran, and Israel to de-escalate and avoid any further military confrontation that could engulf the wider region.
Amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel, France underlined its immediate priority: protecting French nationals, diplomatic staff, and strategic interests in the Middle East.
The French government reiterated its long-standing opposition to Iran acquiring nuclear weapons and called for a peaceful resolution within the framework of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
The ministry stated that France remains ready to contribute to diplomatic solutions alongside its international allies.
The IAEA initially reported no abnormal radiation levels after the airstrikes, and France acknowledged the findings.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) assessed the sites and will continue monitoring the situation closely.
In response to the developments, French President Emmanuel Macron called an emergency defence cabinet meeting on Sunday.
The Élysée Palace confirmed that Macron had already spoken with several global leaders, including Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and would continue engaging with European and regional counterparts.
On Saturday night (US time), President Donald Trump confirmed that the US military bombed three Iranian nuclear sites—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—in a high-risk military operation.
During a press briefing, Trump warned Iran of further precision strikes if Tehran did not end its standoff with Israel.
“This cannot continue. There will either be peace or tragedy for Iran far greater than what we’ve seen in the past eight days,” Trump stated.
He emphasised that more targets remain, saying, “Tonight was the most difficult, and perhaps the most lethal, but if peace does not come quickly, we’ll act again—with precision, speed, and skill.”
On his platform Truth Social, Trump hailed the strikes as a “historic moment for the United States, Israel, and the world,” urging Iran to end hostilities.
In another post, he praised American forces, saying, “There is not another military in the world that could have done this. Now is the time for peace!”
Iranian state media acknowledged that parts of the Fordow nuclear facility were hit in what they called “enemy strikes.” However, they have released limited details about the full extent of the damage.
