Elon Musk has once again turned a business disagreement into a social media spectacle.
The dispute began when Ryanair declined to install Starlink in-flight Wi-Fi, citing high costs and operational challenges. Musk responded by taking the debate directly to his followers on X.
He posted a public poll asking users if he should purchase Ryanair. The poll carried his usual mix of casual humour and curiosity. Within hours, over 750,000 votes had been cast. At the time of reporting, roughly 76.8 per cent supported the idea. Musk has not confirmed whether he has any actual plans to acquire the airline.
The disagreement escalated into personal remarks. Michael O’Leary, Ryanair’s CEO, called Musk ‘an idiot’ during an interview with Newstalk.
Musk responded on X, labelling O’Leary ‘an utter idiot’ and posting a message saying ‘Fire him’. This exchange intensified public attention and online discussion.
Musk also incorporated playful language in his posts. He suggested that Ryanair should be run by someone named Ryan, writing that he wanted to ‘restore Ryan as their rightful ruler’ and finishing with ‘it is your destiny’. These posts kept the conversation trending and engaging worldwide.
Even Ryanair’s official social media account entered the discussion. During a brief service outage, the airline jokingly asked Musk if he needed Wi-Fi, adding another layer of humour to the public feud.
