Tesla CEO Elon Musk has joined the online backlash against billionaire philanthropist George Soros after U.S. President Joe Biden awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour in the United States. Musk’s controversial meme comparing Soros to a Star Wars villain has quickly gained traction on social media.
Elon Musk Musk’s Meme Stirs Up Debate
Musk posted a meme on social media depicting Soros as Sheev Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious, from the iconic Star Wars saga. In the films, Palpatine is shown as a kind and democratic leader who secretly plots to become the Sith Lord Darth Sidious and take over the galaxy. The meme suggests that Soros, similarly, might be concealing his true intentions while presenting himself as a philanthropist. The caption accompanying the meme humorously reads, “George Soros looking quite good here. Must be the lighting.”
The meme’s mix of humour and sharp critique sparked widespread attention and quickly went viral across platforms.
Biden Awards Soros The Presidential Medal Of Freedom
Musk’s trolling comes after President Biden named Soros as one of the 19 recipients of the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom on Saturday. The White House praised Soros for his significant contributions to global democracy, human rights, education, and social justice through his Open Society Foundations. Other notable recipients of the honour included former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, football icon Lionel Messi, and actors Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington.
Musk’s post adds to the ongoing controversy surrounding Soros, who has been a frequent target of criticism, particularly from conservative figures. This latest backlash follows years of attacks on the billionaire investor, whose philanthropic efforts have sparked both admiration and animosity.
Soros At Centre Of Political Tensions In India
The controversy surrounding Soros is not confined to the United States. In India, Soros has become the focal point of political debate. During the Winter Session of Parliament in December, BJP President J.P. Nadda accused the Congress Party of being linked to Soros and his organizations.
With this, Nadda also claimed that Soros’s influence was being used by foreign forces to destabilize India, citing Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s alleged connections to Soros-funded initiatives.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge quickly rejected these allegations, labelling them as baseless. He accused the BJP of attempting to distract from more pressing socio-economic issues facing the country. The spat resulted in several adjournments in both houses of Parliament, further intensifying the political drama surrounding Soros.
