In a series of clear and assertive remarks from Washington, DC, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar outlined New Delhi’s firm stance on several global issues — including energy security, terrorism, and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.
Responding to a question about a proposed US Congressional bill that seeks to impose a 500% tariff on Russian oil imports, Dr Jaishankar said that India is closely monitoring the developments.
He added that the Indian government has remained in regular contact with US Senator Lindsey Graham and other relevant stakeholders.
“Our concerns and interests regarding energy security have been clearly conveyed,” he stated, emphasising that India will respond appropriately if the bill ends up affecting its interests.
On the issue of global terrorism, the minister criticised the double standards adopted by some countries. He remarked that nations often stay silent when terrorists strike other countries but react strongly only when attacks target their own soil.
Contrasting this with India’s approach, he said, “We have been far more consistent and principled. Whether the attacks happen within India or abroad, our stance has remained the same.”
The Minister stressed that diplomacy also involves persuading others to adopt a united front against terrorism.
Clarification on Iran-Israel ceasefire
When asked about US President Donald Trump’s remarks on a ceasefire between Iran and Israel, Jaishankar clarified the record, stating that the ceasefire in question, negotiated directly between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two countries, not through any external mediation.
Regarding the South China Sea, EAM Jaishankar noted that the region is a significant concern for all Quad members. He emphasised the importance of finding peaceful solutions to territorial disputes and maintaining the South China Sea as a conflict-free international waterway, highlighting it as a shared priority for all involved nations.
With these comments, the External Affairs Minister reaffirmed India’s proactive, principle-driven foreign policy and made clear that the country will continue to safeguard its interests on the global stage with clarity and confidence.
