External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar will represent India at the swearing-in ceremony of US President-elect Donald Trump on January 20 in Washington. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that Jaishankar is attending at the invitation of the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee.
In addition to attending the ceremony, Jaishankar will hold meetings with representatives from the incoming US administration and other dignitaries.
Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States at noon on January 20. Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath on the steps of the US Capitol. Vice President-elect JD Vance will take his oath earlier in the day.
The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) has themed the event “Our Enduring Democracy: A Constitutional Promise” to honor the Founding Fathers’ commitment to democracy.
Honoring Former President Jimmy Carter
As part of the inauguration, US flags will fly at half-staff to honor former President Jimmy Carter, who recently passed away at the age of 100. President Joe Biden directed the flags to remain lowered until January 28.
Trump’s 2024 victory was certified by Congress on January 6, clearing his return to the Oval Office for a second term. The certification, led by Vice President Kamala Harris—Trump’s primary opponent—proceeded without significant controversy.
The inauguration signals Trump’s return to leadership, setting the stage for his second presidential term.
