External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S Jaishankar held a series of high-level discussions during the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, engaging with his Italian counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and other global leaders.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), EAM Jaishankar described his meeting with Tajani as warm and productive, focusing on a range of opportunities in technology, clean energy, fertilizers, railways, and investments. He noted, “We also exchanged perspectives on IMEC, Ukraine, and the Indo-Pacific. The recently announced Joint Strategic Action Plan guides our activities. Look forward to welcoming him in India in 2025.”
Jaishankar also participated in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) Outreach Session alongside Indo-Pacific partners. Expressing gratitude for Italy’s hospitality, he highlighted the dynamic shifts in the Indo-Pacific, saying, “The Indo-Pacific is experiencing significant changes, including new convergences and partnerships as well as anxieties, frictions, and stresses.”
The EAM underlined the Quad’s evolution as a pivotal development and emphasized the need for a broader collaborative approach in the region. He, alongside Minister Tajani, identified six key responses necessary for Indo-Pacific stability, including enhanced collaboration in areas like maritime security, semiconductors, and supply chains; increased resources to support sustainable development; stronger governance and disaster resilience capacities; greater interoperability for global commons; adherence to international law; and diversified options for regional policymakers.
“In an era of collaborative endeavors, the Indo-Pacific will require practical solutions, nimble diplomacy, greater adjustment, and more open conversations. The G7 can be one such partner,” Jaishankar asserted.
In addition to his dialogue with Tajani, EAM Jaishankar held bilateral meetings with leaders from the United States, South Korea, and Japan.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed the strength of the U.S.-India partnership, noting on X, “The U.S. and India are stronger when we are working together.” Jaishankar expressed confidence in the growing cooperation between the two nations, emphasizing their shared commitment to global security and prosperity.
During his meeting with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul, Jaishankar highlighted convergences on the Indo-Pacific, a vibrant economic partnership, and active technology collaboration.
With Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, the discussion centered on advancing the India-Japan strategic partnership and enhancing cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
This engagement follows earlier meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Brazil, further cementing the robust ties between the two nations.
The G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting comes amid heightened global focus on the Indo-Pacific. Earlier this year, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held deliberations with counterparts from Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. at the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus, signaling India’s active role in fostering regional cooperation.
EAM Jaishankar’s participation in the G7 and his bilateral engagements underscore India’s growing influence in shaping a collaborative, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
