Dutch PM Dick Schoof strongly opposed the US’s decision to impose a 30% import tariff on goods from the European Union.
Taking to X, Schoof posted, “The US announcement of 30% tariffs on goods imported from the European Union is concerning and not the way forward. The European Commission can count on our full support. As the EU we must remain united and resolute in pursuing an outcome with the United States that is mutually beneficial.”

President Trump Announces New Trade Measures Starting August 1
US President Donald Trump announced that the US will begin imposing the steep tariffs starting August 1. He posted a letter on Truth Social declaring that the European Union must allow complete, open market access to the United States.
Whatever the number you choose to raise them by, will be added on the 30 per cent that we charge,” Trump further warned.
The 27-member EU bloc is now under increasing pressure to respond. Germany has called for a swift agreement to safeguard its industrial sector from potential economic fallout.
Ahead of the August 1 deadline, President Trump advised countries engaged in ongoing trade negotiations to ‘just keep working hard’.
He repeated his long-held stance and claimed that both friends and foes have exploited America for many years.
Before leaving for a flood-hit region in Texas, President Trump also signalled that countries like South Korea, Japan, and others are actively trying to strike deals with Washington to avoid either or minimise the impact of the impending reciprocal tariffs.
