Deadly Flood in Chad

A deadly flood in Chad took over 54 lives that struck the region following a continuous heavy rainfall in the Tibesti province. Begining on the last Friday the downpour continued through Wednesda, Local Authoritie and Media reported.

The relentless downpours have caused widespread destruction. Mahamat Tochi Chidi, the governor of Tibesti province, confirmed that the flooding has resulted in significant property damage. Local media reports indicate the displacement of more than 50,000 people due to the floods.

In response to the crisis, Fatime Boukar Kossei, the minister of social action, national solidarity, and humanitarian affairs, announced the establishment of makeshift shelters for the displaced. “It is crucial for affected populations to relocate to these shelters to avoid health risks associated with flooding,” Kossei stated on social media after visiting the capital, N’Djamena.

The flooding crisis in Chad began in mid-May and has already impacted 245,000 people, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Last week, the organization reported that torrential rains and severe flooding had already resulted in 40 deaths across the country.

The situation remains dire as authorities continue to address the widespread devastation and seek to provide relief to those affected by the ongoing floods.
