External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, on Monday, reiterated India’s “principled and consistent” stance on the Palestinian issue, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Speaking at the inaugural India-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Joint Ministerial Meeting for Strategic Dialogue in Riyadh, Jaishankar highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
He said, “India condemns acts of terrorism and hostage-taking, but we are deeply pained by the death of innocent civilians. Any response must consider humanitarian law principles. We support a ceasefire as soon as possible.”
Jaishankar emphasized India’s long-standing support for a two-state solution and its contributions to Palestinian institutions. He also mentioned India’s increased support to UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) for humanitarian aid.
Strengthening India-GCC Relations
The meeting, held at the GCC General Secretariat in Riyadh, was co-chaired by Jaishankar and Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani. Jaishankar highlighted the importance of people-to-people ties, noting that around 9 million Indians live and work in the Gulf. He urged the GCC to invest in each other’s future to ensure mutual prosperity.
“Our partnership in energy, technology, innovation, and health will drive growth for both India and the GCC,” Jaishankar stated. He also underscored India’s role as a rapidly growing market and called for deeper collaboration in energy security and renewables.
Bilateral Talks with Gulf Leaders
Jaishankar also held bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait. These discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and coordinating on regional and international issues. The Palestinian crisis and regional stability were central topics in these meetings.
Jaishankar will continue his tour with visits to Berlin and Geneva, where he will engage in further diplomatic talks, including discussions on G20, BRICS, and the Ukraine conflict.
