Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian PM Narendra Modi
China welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks on India-China relations, praising his focus on dialogue over discord.
Beijing described the relationship as a ‘ballet between the dragon and the elephant’ that must continue for mutual success.
China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning acknowledged PM Modi’s ‘positive’ comments and highlighted the progress since his meeting with President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia.
“China noted Prime Minister Modi’s recent positive statement on China-India relations and appreciates it,” Mao said at a media briefing.
She added that the Kazan meeting provided strategic direction for both countries.
Mao underlined the historical interactions between the two nations, noting that India and China have shared friendly exchanges for over 2,000 years.
“The two countries should be partners that contribute to each other’s success,” she said. She described their relationship as a ‘cooperative pas de deux’, emphasizing that mutual growth is essential.
During a nearly three-hour conversation with podcaster Lex Fridman, PM Modi stressed that differences should not turn into disputes. He highlighted how India and China once contributed over 50% of the global GDP and noted that cooperation between the two nations is vital for global peace and prosperity.
The Global Times, a Chinese state-run daily, praised PM Modi’s remarks, calling them a ‘pragmatic approach’.
Experts quoted in the publication said the Kazan summit has improved diplomatic and military communication and stabilized border conditions.
PM Modi acknowledged past conflicts, including the 2020 Ladakh standoff, but said talks with President Xi had led to progress.
“After my meeting with President Xi, we have seen a return to normalcy at the border,” he said.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently stated that differences should not define bilateral ties.
“As the largest neighbours, both countries should be partners in each other’s success,” he said.
With the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties approaching, China expressed readiness to work with India to implement key agreements and ensure stable relations.
