President Putin To Arrive In India Today For High-Level Talks With PM Modi

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin will embark on a two-day official visit to India. Shortly after he lands in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host him for a private dinner.

The 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit will take place on Friday, at a time when New Delhi faces pressure from recent US sanctions.

Defence collaboration will likely be a major focus, along with talks on boosting trade and energy relations.

In the lead-up to the trip, Moscow approved a significant defence pact with India. This indicates stronger momentum in military engagement between the two nations.

Putin’s arrival on Thursday evening will mark his first visit to India since the conflict in Ukraine began. He will receive a ceremonial welcome on Friday before formal discussions commence.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov earlier noted that the possible sale of Russia’s Su-57 fighter aircraft to India could be on the agenda.

The visit may result in several agreements, including one to streamline the movement of Indian professionals to Russia. The two sides are also expected to review progress on a proposed free trade pact with the Eurasian Economic Union.

Following the summit, President Putin will be honoured at a state banquet hosted by President Droupadi Murmu. He is further expected to unveil a new India-focused channel of Russian public broadcaster RT, aimed at enhancing media cooperation.

According to a statement issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs on 28 November, “The forthcoming State Visit will provide an opportunity for the leadership of India and Russia to review progress in bilateral relations, set the vision for strengthening the ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership’ and exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.”
