Brazil Voices Concern Over India-Pakistan Tensions; Condemns Terrorism

The Brazilian government has expressed concern over escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’.

Brazil Voices Concern Over India-Pakistan Tensions

The Brazilian government has expressed its grave concern over the recent military actions in Kashmir, following India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’, which targeted high-value terror locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

This operation was launched in response to a terror attack on April 22 that claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians in Pahalgam, India.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its firm stance against terrorism.

“Brazil condemns all forms of terrorism and calls on all parties involved to exercise the utmost restraint to prevent further escalation,” the ministry said.

The government also issued a travel advisory for Brazilian nationals, urging them to avoid non-essential travel to Kashmir and adjacent regions.

However, the statement confirmed that there were no reports of Brazilian citizens being affected by the recent violence.

Brazil’s Diplomatic Support For India

On the same day, Brazilian President Lula de Silva reached out to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express Brazil’s support and solidarity in India’s fight against terrorism.

President Lula conveyed his condolences for the tragic loss of life in Pahalgam and reaffirmed Brazil’s commitment to strengthening its bilateral relations with India.

Prime Minister Modi thanked President Lula for his condolences and noted the importance of strengthening the India-Brazil strategic partnership.

Both leaders discussed opportunities for enhancing cooperation, particularly during Brazil’s presidency of the BRICS group this year.

Brazil’s Condemnation Of The Pahalgam Attack

Brazil had earlier condemned the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, expressing deep concern over the fatalities and injuries caused by the attack.

In a previous statement, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its solidarity with the people of India, offering condolences to the victims’ families and wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.

Military Confrontations Escalate

Hostilities between India and Pakistan escalated on Thursday, as Pakistan’s military launched missile and drone strikes targeting military installations in Jammu, Pathankot, Udhampur, and other locations.

Indian armed forces successfully neutralised these attacks, maintaining control over the region.

‘Operation Sindoor’, which began early on Wednesday, marked one of India’s most assertive responses since the Balakot airstrikes of 2019.

The operation, conducted by India’s Army, Air Force, and Navy, targeted terrorist infrastructure linked to the groups responsible for the April 22 attack.

The Indian government emphasised its right to defend against acts of terrorism emanating from neighbouring nations.

Brazil’s Call For Restraint

Brazil has continued to urge both India and Pakistan to act with restraint in order to avoid further escalation in the region.

The country’s Foreign Ministry has stressed the need for diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis peacefully, warning that continued military actions could destabilise the broader region.

This diplomatic call from Brazil highlights its commitment to global peace and security, as it continues to monitor the situation closely, offering support to both India and Pakistan while advocating for de-escalation.
