Bihar Festival 2026 Celebrated In Mauritius To Mark Bihar Diwas

The High Commission of India in Port Louis, in collaboration with the Government of Bihar, organised Bihar Festival 2026 from March 20 to 22 at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture to mark Bihar Diwas, commemorating the state’s formation in 1912.

President Dharambeer Gokhool inaugurated the festival, attended by ministers, lawmakers, officials, socio-cultural representatives, and members of the Indian diaspora.

The High Commissioner highlighted deep-rooted ties between Bihar and Mauritius, shaped by indentured labourers from Bhojpuri-speaking regions whose traditions now form a vital part of Mauritian culture. He emphasised Bihar’s civilisational importance as the land of Gautama Buddha’s enlightenment and birthplace of Mahavira, along with the legacy of Nalanda University.

The three-day event featured folk performances, Geet Gawai, exhibitions of Madhubani art, Bhojpuri literature, film screenings, and workshops.

Traditional cuisine such as litti chokha and daal pitha drew large crowds.

A literary session hosted over 80 participants, while a Bhojpuri play received strong appreciation.

Competitions and workshops engaged youth and international participants alike.

The closing ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, who praised the initiative.

A Bihar delegation led by Pranav Kumar and Nand Kishor also promoted tourism and cultural collaboration.

The festival reinforced diaspora bonds and advanced cultural diplomacy between India and Mauritius.
