The Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced today the approval of a $21 million grant aimed at bolstering renewable energy resources in Tajikistan. The grant will be used to modernize the Golovnaya hydropower plant, a critical step in enhancing the country’s energy infrastructure.
The additional financing will focus on replacing power generation unit 4 at the Golovnaya plant. This unit, which was not included in the ADB’s original project from 2013, has been out of service since 2019 due to mechanical damage, according to Xinhua news agency.

The ADB’s earlier initiative involved a grant of $136 million to refurbish five of the plant’s six power generation units. With this latest round of funding, the plant’s total installed capacity is set to increase from 240 megawatts in 2012 to 274 megawatts by 2026, the bank stated.
This modernization effort aligns with Tajikistan’s goals to expand its renewable energy capacity and support sustainable development in the region.
