600 Firefighters, Air Force Helicopter Deployed As Massive Fire Broke Out At Bangladesh’s Famous Clothing Market

A massive fire broke out in one of the biggest clothing markets in the capital city of Bangladesh, said officials. Several firefighters and forces have been working to douse the fire.

According to the officials, almost 3,000 shops in Bangladesh’s Bangabazar were burnt into ashes.

The fire started at Bangabazar Market in Dhaka early this morning at 6.10 am (12:10 GMT). Despite the massive fire, no causalities were reported immediately.

The officials also said that 47 units of the fire service are working to control the fire, said a media report. However, the cause of the fire is not known yet.

Speaking to the media, the fire department spokesperson Rakibul Islam said, “Some 600 firefighters … are working to bring the fire under control.”

An air force helicopter had joined the firefighting effort, a military spokesperson said.

The market is one of the popular destinations for cut-price Western fashion brands. It sells the clothes that were produced in the city’s garment factories but failed to meet export standards.

Owners and employees of shops in the market rushed to the spot and were seen removing goods from their stores. Bangabazar is one of the biggest markets in Bangladesh.
