6 Month Old baby affected by Covid 19 treatment
From dealing with the lasting affects of the virus to dealing with the loss of loved ones, the COVID-19 pandemic has presented a variety of difficulties for people around the world. Medical professionals are baffled by a highly odd and rare condition that has emerged in Thailand. It concerns a six-month-old infant whose eyes became blue after receiving Covid-19 treatment.
Head-scratching effect of treatment
People all across the world have experienced a variety of challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, from coping with the virus’ long-term effects to grieving the loss of loved ones. A highly peculiar and uncommon illness that has appeared in Thailand has doctors scratching their heads. It relates to a six-month-old baby whose eyes turned blue following viral treatment.
The baby’s eyes were the only body part with the peculiar colour; the skin, nails, and nose were unaffected. Fortunately, the baby’s symptoms started to get better after three days, so the physicians decided to stop the therapy. The infant’s cornea had its usual color by the sixth day.

COVID-19 treatment resulted in this condition because…
“An eye examination was performed by an ophthalmologist using a handheld slit lamp 2 weeks after infection. The patient was able to fix and follow the light in all directions. The cornea was clear and lacked a bluish corneal hue,” as per the website.
Currently, medical professionals are unsure of the precise reason why favipiravir produced the discoloration. They believe that a number of reasons could be to blame for this peculiar occurrence including the “drug itself, its metabolites, or additional components found in the tablets, such as titanium dioxide and yellow ferric oxide.”
“Therefore, monitoring the long-term safety of favipiravir used in pediatric patients is of utmost importance. The reported adverse event, although rare, should be taken seriously and closely monitored in future cases,” the doctors added.

This is not the first case…
Similar circumstances were reported in India in December 2021, where a 20-year-old male with brown eyes saw the same blue corneal changes as the infants. This person was identified as having COVID-19 and was given Favipiravir after two days of showing no signs of improvement. On the second day of the therapy, he observed an unexpected change—his typically dark brown eyes had changed to blue. Doctors advised him to cease taking the prescription as a result of this unanticipated adverse effect, and just one day after doing so, his eyes returned to their normal brown color.
