NASA recently shared a captivating image of Mercury, the smallest planet in our solar system and the closest to the Sun. Despite its small size and proximity to the Sun, Mercury isn’t the hottest planet. In the image, Mercury appears tan and various shades of blue, with visible craters on its surface.

This stunning picture was captured by MESSENGER, the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury. MESSENGER collected color-enhanced maps to distinguish chemical, mineralogical, and physical differences in the planet’s rocks, with a primary focus on studying its geology, magnetic field, and chemical composition.
