Lockdown In Delhi to be imposed over G20 Summit?

Since September 8 for the two-day G20 Summit on September 9 and 10, the Central government has tightened strong security measures and limitations on the movements of vehicles and people in “regulated” and “controlled” zones, closing off large stretches of highways in the heart of New Delhi.  The government apparatus was at pains to clarify that it was not a lockdown in Delhi after feverish beautifying works in the national capital saw the slums and ugly spots covered up with green sheeting. Starting on September 8, the majority of businesses and newspaper offices along the highways leading to ITO have implemented a three-day total shutdown.

However, movement of medical emergency vehicles will be facilitated throughout Delhi,” a traffic advisory by Delhi police on the morning of September 8 said.

Another message stated that starting at 9 p.m. on September 7, the entry of goods vehicles into Delhi from across borders had been suspended. Only cars carrying essential commodities, including as milk, vegetables, fruits, medical supplies, etc., would be permitted admission.
