Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani was admitted to Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in Delhi on Friday evening with a chest infection. Hospital officials said his condition was stable.
The 98-year-old leader arrived at around 7.30 PM and was admitted to the pulmonary department. A team of doctors is monitoring him, and medical tests are underway.
Advani remains under observation as he receives treatment, according to hospital officials.
This is another hospitalisation for the veteran leader in recent months. He was admitted to Apollo Hospital in May this year due to age-related health complications and remained under medical care for several days before his discharge.
In December 2024, doctors admitted Advani to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital for medical management and investigations.
A neurologist supervised his treatment. The hospital subsequently reported gradual improvement and expected to move him out of the ICU within one to two days.
Born on November 8, 1927, in Karachi, present-day Pakistan, Advani played a pivotal role in the BJP’s growth into a major national political force. He served as the party’s president several times and strengthened its organisational network across India.
His 1990 Ram Rath Yatra marked a significant moment in Indian politics and expanded the BJP’s political reach.
Advani served as Deputy Prime Minister from 2002 to 2004 under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He also held key portfolios, including Home Affairs.
The government conferred the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, on Advani in 2024. He received the Padma Vibhushan in 2015.
