Nasser Hussain on England cricket team
Former captain Nasser Hussain says that England’s miserable world cup performance has shocked people back home and signifies the end of a great era. Following the humiliating loss to Sri Lanka on Thursday, the reigning champions were ranked ninth out of tenth and had little prospect of making it to the semifinals.
England takes on in-form India on Sunday after loosing their four out of previous five games, including one against Afghanistan. That’s a long way from 2019, when England, captained by Eoin Morgan, defeated New Zealand in an epic World cup Final, and the real analysis started.
We are talking about some of the greatest players in our white-ball history but this has just turned out to be a bridge too far for some of them, Hussain stated to Sky Sports. It feels like the end of an era, so while I wouldn’t have changed the side before the tournament, I would definitely be considering doing so now.
That doesn’t lessen the accomplishments of this English team. Even though we can be pessimistic and tell them to “get rid off the lot of them”, they have provided us with six or seven years of incredibly enjoyable white-ball cricket. Concerns have been raised concerning Englands preparation for the competition and whether the absence of 50-over cricket for the teams main players hurt their chances of winning the title again.
