A bridge in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district collapsed on Friday due to strong water currents, disrupting road traffic for thousands of locals. The two-year-old structure, built by the Public Works Department (PWD), was located in Chaukhandi village in Pirpaiti block.
Villagers Raise Concerns Over Negligence
Villagers reported signs of damage on Thursday, noting a bent section of the bridge. By Friday morning, the entire structure fell into the water, cutting off access between the block headquarters and the district, affecting around 100,000 residents across six Panchayats. Despite the collapse, no administrative officials had arrived at the site, prompting accusations of negligence from local residents.
Widespread Criticism and Corruption Allegations
The incident is the third bridge collapse in Bihar within a week, raising questions about infrastructure stability amid severe flooding. Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav criticized the Nitish Kumar government, accusing it of corruption and sharing a video of the collapse on social media. Yadav claimed that “hundreds of bridges” across Bihar had collapsed recently and called for action against those responsible for alleged corruption in construction projects.
