On September 6, the nearly 50-year-old ‘Hostel Days’ building collapsed at around 01:30 PM while workers carried out excavation and repair work in its basement.
Rescue teams pulled 12 people from the debris, including seven students who died in the tragedy. Several others reportedly sustained injuries.
Initial investigations found that authorities had originally approved the building only as a ground-plus-one structure, but its owners allegedly added several floors illegally.
Police arrested the building owner Hariram Gupta, his wife Urmila and their son Mahesh following the collapse.
The incident has highlighted the difficulties emergency services could face in the area.
The video shared shows extremely narrow lanes with limited space for movement. Fire engines, ambulances and heavy rescue equipment such as JCB machines could struggle to reach buildings during a fire, collapse or other emergency.
The area’s ageing buildings have raised further concerns as landlords increasingly add floors to meet the growing demand for student accommodation.
Unauthorised construction and basement excavation without structural audits could further weaken old buildings.
The collapse has alarmed students and families, with some reportedly seeking safer accommodation.
The incident has renewed calls for stricter building checks, safety audits and tighter PG regulations in Delhi.
