In a dramatic turn of events ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, police have arrested Janata Dal (United) candidate Anant Singh from Mokama in connection with the murder of Jan Suraaj Party worker Dularchand Yadav.
The arrest, confirmed by Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kartikeya Sharma, comes merely days before the first phase of polling on November 6, sparking widespread political reactions across the state. Officials said the crime occurred on October 30 near Khushhal Chak in Mokama, where tensions between rival party supporters spiralled into deadly violence.
According to police sources, Jan Suraaj candidate Piyush Priyadarshi, popularly known as Lallu Mukhiya, was campaigning with his supporters, accompanied by 75-year-old Dularchand Yadav, a veteran local leader and former member of the RJD.
Around the same time, Anant Singh and his supporters passed through the same stretch, leading to a heated verbal exchange that quickly escalated into stone pelting and physical clashes.
In the ensuing violence, Dularchand Yadav sustained serious injuries and succumbed shortly after. Police later imposed heavy security in the region to prevent retaliation and restore calm.
Political Turmoil Deepens
The following day, violence flared again when the convoy of RJD candidate Veena Devi, wife of former MP Surajbhan Singh, came under attack in the Pandarak area. Eyewitnesses reported that unidentified miscreants pelted stones at her convoy, damaging several vehicles and injuring at least one person.
Known as a strongman of Mokama, 58-year-old Anant Singh has long been associated with political influence and multiple criminal cases. His latest arrest, coming at a politically sensitive moment, has intensified the already volatile atmosphere in Bihar’s election battleground.
Police have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident, and officials indicated that more arrests could follow as they examine the sequence of events leading to the fatal clash.
The violence in Mokama has underscored the fragile law and order situation ahead of polling, adding a layer of tension to an already charged election campaign.
