The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR, forecasting rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds that may bring relief from the ongoing heatwave.

After several days of extreme temperatures, residents across the national capital experienced scorching weather, with maximum temperatures ranging between 45 and 46 degrees Celsius.

The IMD said Delhi-NCR is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall on May 28, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching up to 50 kmph in several areas.

Weather officials predicted very light to light rainfall during the afternoon and evening hours. They also warned that thundersqualls and winds moving at speeds of 50 to 60 kmph could affect normal activities in parts of the city.

The IMD advised residents to stay alert and regularly check weather updates, especially as similar weather conditions may affect neighbouring states.

The Safdarjung weather station recorded a maximum temperature of 44.3 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature remained around 26 degrees Celsius.

Although temperatures may remain high for the next few days, the weather department expects a drop of 5 to 7 degrees Celsius after May 29, likely providing considerable relief from the severe heat.

The department also warned that thunderstorms and strong winds could temporarily disrupt traffic movement and outdoor activities.

Authorities urged residents to exercise caution during periods of heavy rain and gusty winds.

The IMD reported a delay in the arrival of the southwest monsoon.

Officials now expect the monsoon to reach Keralam between May 28 and June 3, while Delhi may receive monsoon showers around June 27.

Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘poor’ category on Wednesday, with several monitoring stations recording high AQI levels across the city.
