Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region may soon find relief from the intense summer heat as weather conditions become favourable for rain and thunderstorms.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across the region.
According to the IMD, Delhi is likely to witness partly cloudy skies during the day, followed by light rain and thunderstorm activity in the afternoon and evening.
Winds may blow at speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph in isolated areas.
Meteorologists attribute the changing weather pattern to a western disturbance and favourable local weather systems. These weather systems are likely to trigger pre-monsoon showers and thunderstorms across Delhi-NCR until June 21, helping keep temperatures lower than recent levels.
The IMD expects partly cloudy skies, intermittent rainfall and occasional thunderstorms across the region through Sunday.
Although temperatures may not change significantly over the next 24 hours, cloud cover and moisture-laden winds should keep conditions relatively comfortable, with maximum temperatures between 37°C and 39°C and minimum temperatures between 25°C and 27°C.
Forecasters expect the southwest monsoon to regain momentum in the coming days, bringing widespread rainfall to several regions after a prolonged slowdown.
The IMD has issued rain and thunderstorm alerts for 19 states, with strong winds of up to 70 kmph in some areas.
Heavy rainfall is also likely in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
Delhi’s air quality remained in the poor category, with Anand Vihar recording an AQI of 223 and IIT Delhi registering 203.
