Heavy rain and thunderstorms hit parts of Delhi-NCR on Thursday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert.
The weather department has forecast further rain, lightning and strong winds for Friday, October 16.
North and north-west Delhi are likely to receive moderate to heavy showers, with winds reaching 40–50 kmph and gusts of up to 60 kmph. Other parts of the capital may see lighter rain and thunderstorms.
The change in weather has brought relief from recent warm conditions.
Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to hover around 29°C on Thursday, lower than earlier this week.
A western disturbance has triggered the rainfall. These weather systems often bring rain and thunderstorms to northern India as they move eastwards.
Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad may receive showers, although rainfall intensity is expected to vary across the region.
The IMD expects conditions to improve from Saturday, October 17, with partly cloudy skies and a maximum temperature of around 32°C in Delhi.
By Sunday, October 18, skies are likely to be mainly clear, with temperatures rising further.
Heavy showers, lightning and strong winds could disrupt traffic and outdoor activities. Waterlogging may slow commuters, particularly during peak hours.
Rain could temporarily reduce dust levels and offer some relief from air pollution.
Any improvement in Delhi’s air quality will depend on rainfall intensity and wind conditions in the following days.
