Delhi-NCR Weather: Heavy Rain Triggers Waterlogging, Red Alert Across Capital

Several parts of Delhi and surrounding NCR areas received heavy rainfall in the early hours of Tuesday, resulting in water accumulation on roads and in low-lying areas.

Persistent showers kept the capital under dense cloud cover and disrupted regular activities, particularly during the morning commuting hours.

The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for all districts of Delhi, including North Delhi, Central Delhi, South Delhi, East Delhi, West Delhi, New Delhi and Shahdara. The warning remained in effect until 9:45 AM.

Rainfall lashed key areas such as Parliament Street, Connaught Place, AIIMS, ITO, RK Puram and Ferozeshah Road.

The weather department placed Gurugram and Faridabad under a yellow alert and predicted additional rainfall in both cities.

Noida remained covered by thick clouds, although the IMD did not issue a specific warning for the city.

Heavy rain on Monday caused major traffic bottlenecks across Delhi, Gurugram and Noida. Waterlogging affected several key roads and low-lying stretches.

The adverse weather affected aviation services, with 26 flights cancelled, 15 diverted and more than 390 delayed.

The latest rainfall has taken Delhi’s cumulative monsoon precipitation above normal levels at multiple monitoring stations.

By August 24, Safdarjung had recorded 246.2 mm of rain compared with its normal figure of 191.1 mm, marking a 29 per cent surplus.

Ridge registered 243 mm, which was 50 per cent above normal, while Ayanagar recorded 266.3 mm, representing a 66 per cent excess.

The IMD linked the intense rainfall to the interaction between a middle- and upper-level western disturbance and a lower-tropospheric trough extending towards southwest Uttar Pradesh.

Despite the rainfall, air quality across Delhi-NCR remained mostly within the poor category.

Anand Vihar recorded the highest pollution reading among the listed stations at 208. Other monitoring locations reported readings ranging from satisfactory to poor.

Residents and commuters should stay alert as continued rainfall may disrupt road and air travel across the region.
