Delhi-NCR Under Red Alert As IMD Forecasts Rain, Thunderstorms And Strong Winds

A noticeable drop in temperature brought welcome relief to residents across Delhi-NCR on Friday morning.

Grey skies, intermittent breezes, and lingering moisture from overnight showers transformed weather conditions across the region after several days of uncomfortable heat and humidity.

The India Meteorological Department has placed Delhi and nearby districts under a red alert, indicating the likelihood of potentially disruptive weather.

Forecasts suggest multiple spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning strikes, and powerful winds through the day.

Officials expect sustained wind speeds of 40–50 kmph, while certain localities could witness stronger gusts reaching up to 60 kmph.

The weather system is not limited to the National Capital Region.

Forecasts indicate that parts of Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and adjoining areas may also experience thunderstorms and rainfall over the next several hours.

The IMD has forecast the possibility of hailstorms in some isolated locations.

The IMD has further warned that squally winds may intensify to 60–70 kmph. Occasional gusts could touch 80 kmph across parts of north-west India.

Experts have attributed the ongoing weather activity to the interaction of several atmospheric systems.

A western disturbance is moving across northern India. Along with a cyclonic circulation over Haryana and an associated trough, it has created favourable conditions for widespread rainfall and thunderstorms.

These systems are likely to remain active for the next few days, increasing the possibility of continued wet weather.

Authorities have urged citizens to follow safety precautions during periods of severe weather.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid open areas during lightning. They have also urged people to stay away from temporary or weak structures and minimise outdoor travel during strong winds.

This latest spell of rainfall is likely to bring further relief from soaring temperatures. Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 38.7°C on Thursday, while high humidity levels made conditions feel considerably hotter.

Meteorologists expect the southwest monsoon to arrive in Delhi-NCR between 25 and 30 June. It will then progress into other north-western regions, including Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
