The India Meteorological Department has predicted a spell of light rainfall across Delhi-NCR over the next few days, raising hopes of relief from the hot and humid weather.
The forecast includes showers on 27 June and again between 1 and 2 July, with nearby cities such as Noida and Ghaziabad also expected to receive rainfall.
Weather officials said the national capital is likely to experience partly cloudy skies for the next five days.
Bright daytime conditions are expected to give way to increasing cloudiness, while isolated evening showers may follow strong afternoon winds.
The IMD has also forecast similar weather conditions across parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh as the southwest monsoon gradually advances.
The IMD has placed western Rajasthan under a rain alert, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds on 27 June.
In Uttarakhand, rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely between 30 June and 2 July.
According to the IMD, atmospheric conditions are steadily improving for the southwest monsoon to extend into additional parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand within the next three to four days.
Satellite imagery captured by INSAT-3DS shows extensive monsoon cloud cover across central India, the Bay of Bengal, the northeastern region, and parts of southern India.
Meteorologists attributed the temporary slowdown in monsoon activity to the absence of well-developed low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal, which normally help transport moisture inland and generate widespread rainfall.
Outlook for Early July
Forecast models now indicate that a large tropical weather system may form over the eastern Indian Ocean before moving into the Bay of Bengal within the next four to seven days. Its development could strengthen the monsoon current, trigger the formation of a low-pressure area and significantly increase rainfall during the first week of July, helping the monsoon advance across the remaining parts of northwest India, including Delhi-NCR.
