Delhi-NCR continued to experience oppressive heat and humidity on Monday morning as residents awaited the delayed arrival of the southwest monsoon.
Despite the uncomfortable conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast cloudy skies, rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds across parts of the National Capital Region, raising hopes of respite from the prolonged spell of hot weather.
The IMD said the southwest monsoon will advance further across North India over the next five to six days. It will likely cover more parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand within two to three days before reaching Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and south-eastern Rajasthan.
While rain is expected to bring relief, the IMD has warned that heatwave conditions will continue in parts of Uttar Pradesh.
Skymet has forecast that the southwest monsoon may reach Delhi around 4 July if weather conditions remain favourable.
The national capital recorded its warmest morning in nearly two years, with the minimum temperature settling at 31.1 degrees Celsius, 3.2 degrees above the seasonal average.
The maximum temperature touched 41.8 degrees Celsius, while the heat index, or ‘feels-like’ temperature, climbed above 50 degrees Celsius due to high humidity.
Meteorologists blamed the discomfort on high humidity and elevated wet-bulb temperatures, making the weather feel much hotter.
The IMD said humid conditions will continue until the monsoon arrives, though rain and thunderstorms may bring temporary relief.
In Uttar Pradesh, Prayagraj recorded 43.4°C, while Lucknow registered 39.7°C.
The IMD has forecast isolated heatwave conditions, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in eastern parts of the state over the next 24 hours.
