Global crude oil prices fell sharply on Monday after the United States and Iran reached an agreement and announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments.

The international benchmark Brent crude declined by nearly 5 per cent to around $83 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dropped more than 5 per cent to about $80 per barrel.

The sharp fall reflected growing confidence that global oil supplies would remain stable following the easing of tensions in West Asia.

Market participants welcomed the development, which reduced fears of disruptions in one of the world’s most important energy corridors.

The Strait of Hormuz carries a significant share of global crude oil exports and plays a critical role in maintaining energy flows to international markets.

Analysts said the decline in oil prices helped improve investor sentiment by easing concerns over inflation and energy costs.

Lower crude prices could also benefit major oil-importing economies by reducing import bills and supporting economic growth.

US President Donald Trump announced a deal with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and remove the US naval blockade.

Reports suggest both countries could formally sign the agreement later this week.

The development lifted global market sentiment, with major Asian indices trading higher and India’s Sensex and Nifty rising more than 1 per cent.

Lower crude oil prices and easing geopolitical tensions boosted investor confidence worldwide.
