The National Commission for Women (NCW) summoned stand-up comedian Samay Raina on Tuesday. This was in response to objectionable remarks he made in a recent episode of the digital show India’s Got Latent.
The Commission took suo-moto cognisance of the matter. It found Raina’s comments offensive and derogatory to women.
NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar led the proceedings and expressed strong disapproval of the content.
Raina appeared before the Commission and submitted a written apology. He stated that he had no intention to hurt sentiments. He assured the NCW that he would avoid such conduct in the future.
NCW Issues Stern Warning
Rahatkar reminded Samay Raina of the responsibility that comes with public influence. She stressed the need to maintain respect and sensitivity towards women, especially on digital platforms.
She directed Raina to refrain from making disrespectful remarks going forward. She also advised him to use his platform to promote awareness of women’s dignity and rights.
Raina Commits to Responsible Content
Raina gave both a verbal and written commitment to the Commission. He pledged to create respectful and responsible content from now on. He also promised to work on material that promotes women’s issues and upholds their dignity.
In its official statement, the NCW reiterated that public figures shape societal attitudes. The Commission said it will continue monitoring digital content to ensure respectful portrayals of women.
This incident is part of NCW’s broader effort to hold media and entertainment platforms accountable. The goal is to reinforce gender sensitivity and promote equality and respect for women.
