In a deeply distressing incident, a 15-year-old Class 10 girl jumped from the fourth floor of Som Lalit School in Ahmedabad’s Navrangpura area on Thursday afternoon.
According to CCTV footage reviewed by police, the student entered the fourth-floor lobby alone, calmly twirling a keychain, before suddenly leaping over the railing.
The student’s fall occurred around 12:27 PM, reportedly during a break period.
A classmate attempted to stop her but was unable to hold her back in time.
The girl suffered serious injuries to her head, limbs, and spine and was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where she was admitted to the intensive care unit.
Plans were underway to transfer her to a different facility, but her condition deteriorated, and she died around 10 PM.
Police Begin Investigation
Navrangpura police have registered a case of accidental death. Inspector A A Desai confirmed that statements are being taken from school staff and classmates.
Authorities are examining various angles to understand the events leading up to the tragedy.
The deceased girl lived in Naranpura with her parents and siblings. Her father is an optician with a shop in the city’s Gandhi Road area.
At the time of the incident, her family had travelled to their native village in Rajasthan. Investigators plan to question them upon their return.
Signs of Emotional Disturbance
Preliminary reports suggest the student had recently returned to school after a month-long medical leave.
Her parents had submitted a medical certificate prior to her rejoining.
On the day of the incident, the school principal informed police that the girl appeared emotionally unsettled and had been shouting in class earlier that morning. A teacher intervened and calmed her down.
The District Education Officer (DEO) has requested a comprehensive report from the school.
A forensic science team has conducted an on-site examination, and a post-mortem report is awaited. The school has pledged full cooperation with the investigation.
This heartbreaking event has reignited discussions on student mental health, school safety, and the need for early emotional support in academic environments.
Authorities are urging educational institutions to implement proactive mental health monitoring and counselling services.
