Artemis II Launch: NASA Sends Crew Around Moon After 50 Years

NASA achieved a historic milestone on Wednesday as its Artemis II mission lifted off from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, sending four astronauts on the first crewed journey around the Moon in over 50 years.

The mission, using the Space Launch System rocket topped with the Orion spacecraft, marks NASA’s first crewed flight under the Artemis programme.

The crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, alongside Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.

A brief pause in the countdown at T-10 minutes did not hinder the successful liftoff, signalling the start of a mission poised to expand human capabilities in deep space.

During Artemis II, the astronauts will travel approximately 7,400 kilometres beyond the Moon’s far side before returning to Earth.

The mission is designed to validate life-support systems on Orion, practise critical operations for future lunar expeditions, and capture images of the Moon’s far side.

Re-entry will be among the most demanding phases, with Orion expected to endure temperatures near 5,000 degrees Celsius while travelling at roughly 25,000 miles per hour before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.

The mission represents several historic firsts: it includes the first woman, the first African-American, and the first Canadian to journey toward the Moon.

Artemis II also sets the stage for Artemis III, which aims to land astronauts on the Moon’s south pole later this decade and establish a long-term human presence, ultimately paving the way for eventual missions to Mars.

The Artemis programme continues the legacy of the Apollo missions (1968–1972), which carried 24 astronauts to the Moon, including 12 who walked on its surface, reinforcing NASA’s vision for sustained lunar exploration and deeper ventures into the solar system.
