Apple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its chief hardware officer, Tang Tan, accusing the artificial intelligence company of orchestrating a coordinated effort to obtain confidential information related to unreleased Apple products.

The case, filed in the Northern District of California, alleges that OpenAI encouraged former Apple employees to disclose proprietary designs, engineering documents and other sensitive materials.

According to the lawsuit, Tang Tan, who previously served as Apple’s Vice President of Product Design and led the development of products including the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods, urged Apple employees to share confidential information during recruitment interviews.

Apple claims this formed part of a broader strategy to gain access to trade secrets linked to future hardware.

The lawsuit also names former Apple hardware engineer Chang Liu, alleging he copied dozens of confidential hardware-related files before leaving the company.

Apple claims the files contained detailed information on unreleased products, engineering presentations and proprietary technologies that were later used to support OpenAI’s hardware development.

Apple further alleged that OpenAI actively coached departing employees on how to leave the company without losing access to confidential files and sensitive information.

The company accused OpenAI of systematically targeting Apple employees and coordinating efforts to obtain trade secrets through former staff members.

OpenAI rejected the allegations, stating that it has no interest in other companies’ trade secrets and remains focused on developing innovative technologies that benefit people worldwide.

Despite recent collaboration on Apple Intelligence and Siri, ties reportedly soured after OpenAI recruited former Apple executive Jony Ive and hundreds of Apple employees.

Apple has asked the court to order OpenAI to destroy the alleged confidential material and redesign any products using its proprietary technology.
