WhatsApp Bill Payments Are Here: What Can You Pay Through The App?

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has started introducing a bill payment service in India, allowing users to handle household and utility payments within the app.

The company said the feature is being introduced in phases and will reach all Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.

Users can, however, access it by selecting the rupee icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen.

The service operates through the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network and covers around 22,722 billers across 30 categories. These include electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card bills and loan repayments.

WhatsApp users will be able to check previous and upcoming payments, link multiple accounts from the same provider and complete transactions through UPI, credit cards or debit cards.

Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and country head at Meta India, said the company wants to make paying bills on WhatsApp as straightforward as sending a message.

The move comes as WhatsApp expands its financial services in India.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in June that CRED founder Kunal Shah would join Meta as WhatsApp’s next global CEO. He further announced that Meta would invest around $900 million, or nearly Rs 8,550 crore, in the fintech company.

WhatsApp Pay recorded 150 million transactions in June 2026, more than four times the 37 million transactions registered in June 2024. Its share of total UPI transaction volumes, however, increased during the period, rising from 0.27 per cent in June 2024 to around 0.7 per cent in June 2026.
