The teen experience activates automatically when OpenAI identifies a user as under 18 or when users state they are aged 13 to 17. It applies additional safeguards around self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities and sexually explicit or graphic content.
The company has strengthened learning-focused features.
Study Mode uses guiding questions and step-by-step support. It encourages students to understand concepts instead of simply receiving answers.
Responsible Homework Reminders aim to discourage shortcuts and redirect students towards collaborative problem-solving.
Quizzes and Learning Visualisations offer additional ways to practise and reinforce concepts.
Study Hours allow teens or parents to set periods when Study Mode activates automatically.
OpenAI has added more frequent break reminders to encourage balanced usage.
Parents who link their accounts can manage selected settings through Parental Controls and establish Quiet Hours. In limited high-risk situations, they can receive safety notifications.
The company said the approach aims to give parents greater oversight while allowing teenagers to use AI for learning and age-appropriate activities.
OpenAI has expanded resources for families, including guidance on responsible AI use, learning and healthy digital habits.
