OpenAI is preparing a significant workforce expansion, aiming to nearly double its employee base to around 8,000 by year-end, according to a report by the Financial Times. The company currently employs approximately 4,500 people and is accelerating recruitment across engineering, research, product development, and sales functions.
The hiring surge also includes specialised roles designed to assist enterprises in deploying artificial intelligence solutions more efficiently.
As part of its expansion strategy, OpenAI has secured additional office space in San Francisco, increasing its footprint to over one million square feet, with plans to onboard nearly a dozen employees daily.
The expansion comes amid growing competition in the AI industry, particularly from Anthropic, which has recently gained momentum in attracting enterprise clients.
Data from payments firm Ramp indicates that new business customers are increasingly opting for Anthropic’s solutions, signalling a shift from previous trends.
In response, OpenAI has initiated a strategic recalibration. Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman has directed teams to prioritise flagship offerings, notably ChatGPT, while advancing its coding model Codex.
The company is also integrating Codex with ChatGPT into a unified platform aimed at both enterprises and individual users to improve functionality and adoption.
OpenAI is further exploring collaborations with private equity firms to deploy its tools across portfolio companies.
Despite rapid growth, both OpenAI and Anthropic continue to operate at a loss, investing heavily in advanced model development while facing mounting pressure to achieve profitability and consider future public listings.
