In a move to enhance its outreach and engage with the public more effectively, NASA has announced the launch of its very own on-demand streaming platform, named “NASA+.” The platform will not only feature live broadcasts that NASA already provides but will also offer a range of original documentaries for space enthusiasts to explore.
Expected to be unveiled in the coming months, “NASA+” will introduce new informative TV shows that will be both free and ad-free, ensuring an uninterrupted and immersive viewing experience for its audience. The goal is to modernize the agency’s online presence, making its information more accessible, discoverable, and secure for the users it serves.
Jeff Seaton, the Chief Information Officer at NASA’s headquarters in Washington, expressed the significance of this development, stating that NASA’s legacy footprint provides an opportunity to significantly enhance the user experience for the public. The revamping process will involve upgrading the main websites technologically and streamlining content engagement to better serve the agency’s mission.
To ensure widespread accessibility, “NASA+” will be available through NASA’s mobile apps on iOS and Android devices. Additionally, desktop users can access the platform through web browsers, while popular media players such as Roku, Apple TV, and Fire TV will host the app.
The transformation of NASA’s digital presence goes beyond the streaming platform. NASA is working on creating a new web and app experience, consolidating information about its missions, research projects, and updates on the Artemis program. This integration will make it easier for users to access a wealth of space-related content in one cohesive platform.
NASA’s Associate Administrator, Marc Etkind, shared the vision behind this initiative, emphasizing that the new streaming platform will make space exploration easily accessible to the public, allowing them to explore the mysteries of the universe and witness the agency’s endeavours firsthand.
Currently available as a beta version, the upgraded web experience offers a glimpse of what’s to come. Once fully launched, NASA plans to further enrich the platform by adding more libraries and websites to cater to the different interests and curiosities of space enthusiasts.
With “NASA+,” the space agency aims to strengthen connections with its visitors and viewers, presenting discovery programs in an interdisciplinary and crosscutting manner. The platform will encompass a wide range of topics, from exoplanet research to understanding Earth’s climate and the solar system’s exploration.
