Is This The Start Of A Bigger Problem For Samsung Biologics?

Unionised employees at Samsung Biologics commenced a five-day general strike on Friday, demanding improved wages and enhanced performance-linked compensation. This marks the company’s first industrial action since its establishment in 2011.

The biotechnology arm of the Samsung Group stated that it has mobilised all available personnel to limit disruption. It, however, acknowledged that operations may face unavoidable setbacks.

Estimates suggest that a full-scale strike could result in losses exceeding 640 billion won, nearly half of its first-quarter revenue of 1.26 trillion won.

Chief Executive Officer John Rim urged employees to reconsider participation, cautioning that the strike may inflict irreversible damage on both the company and its workforce. He reiterated management’s commitment to constructive dialogue aimed at restoring trust and stability.

The union has demanded a 14 per cent rise in both base and performance pay, a one-time payment of 30 million won per employee, and bonuses equal to 20 per cent of annual operating profit.

In contrast, the company has proposed a combined increase of 6.2 per cent.

Negotiations have failed despite 13 rounds of discussions between December and March.

The company recently sought a court injunction to prevent the strike. The court partially upheld the request, restricting action across three production stages while permitting it in six.

Industry experts warn that disruptions could affect product quality, noting that regulators such as the US Food and Drug Administration emphasise process integrity.

Both parties will resume talks on Monday under government mediation.
