Thousands of users of the popular social media platform Instagram reported widespread technical issues early on Wednesday, particularly related to direct messaging services.
Many users said they were unable to access their direct messages (DMs), while others reported that chat themes had unexpectedly disappeared from conversations.
Several users reported the issue on online forums and social media, saying key features of the app had stopped working. Many said their message pages suddenly showed no conversations despite having active chats.
Others faced problems accessing contacts or using the search tool, while some users reported that customised chat themes had disappeared from their conversations.
Outage tracking platform Downdetector recorded over 10,000 reports of users facing problems accessing Instagram early in the morning, noting that the actual number of affected users could be higher.
Data showed that 71 per cent of the complaints were related to access issues, while 19 per cent involved server connection problems and about 5 per cent concerned difficulties with the feed or timeline.
Most complaints came from the United States, with over 10,000 reports.
India recorded around 100 complaints, while about 170 users in the United Kingdom reported issues, with the spike peaking around 9:11 AM IST. The disruption mainly affected messaging-related features.
Meanwhile, a study of more than 8,000 children aged 10 to 14 found that spending over 30 minutes daily on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat may gradually reduce concentration levels.
Researchers observed that daily social media use increases with age, rising from about 30 minutes for nine-year-olds to nearly 2.5 hours for 13-year-olds, which could affect attention span during adolescence.
